#2: ITL Athletes Amass Largest Medal Haul In Malta’s First G2 Event

ITL athletes absolutely killed it during their performance in the Invitational Games of the Small States held on the 6th and 7th October 2022.

Cadet athlete Michela Scerri stormed her way to gold after overcoming opponents from San Marino and Montenegro.

Kids athletes Jean Schembri and Dwayne Micallef also walked away with gold after winning their respective set. Schembri got the better of an athlete hailing from Faroe Islands.

ITL’s Alycia Cassar also made the podium with a silver after achieving a victory against her Andorran athlete in the semi-final. She sustained a narrow loss against Cyprus in the final. She was joined by ITL Kid’s athlete Zach Zammit, who hit the podium after finishing in second place.

One of the most anticipated fights was that of Senior athlete Saydou Diao, who made his debut against San Marino. Diao won the first round after forcing his athlete into disqualification with gamgeoms. He then lost the second round, also by disqualification. The final round had all spectators on the edge of their seats. Unfortunately, San Marino got the better of Diao with a final score of 8-5. Regardless, Diao made the podium with a third-placed finished.

All in all, six ITL athletes amassed a total of 3 golds, 2 silver and 1 bronze between them. The largest medal haul amongst all taekwondo clubs in Malta.

The competition welcomed national athletes from Andorra, San Marino, Montenegro, Cyprus, Faroe Islands and Luxembourg. It was presided by International Referee Chair Chekir Chelbat and the Malta Taekwondo Association team.
