#14: ITL Members Nominated For Two Prestigious Awards

After some serious results, ITL athlete Michela Scerri (13) has been nominated for Sportswoman of the year while Association President Anna Vassallo (ITL) has been nominated for the Official of the Year for a second time running.

The Malta Sports Journalists Association organised the event with SportMalta the 63rd edition of the SportMalta Awards l-Għażliet Sportivi Nazzjonali.

Michela’s hard-earned results at the Games of the Small States of Europe (wherein she achieved first place) have thrown her into the running along with some of Malta’s high-fliers.

Michela also placed first in the Brussels International Open last December. Since then, she has kept herself busy with one training camp (Greece), one ranked competition (President’s Cup - Turkey, G2) and another ranked competition, come March (Belgium Open, G2).

Her name was published in the list along with Ella Borg (Gymnastics), Selma Cassar (Jiu-jitsu), Francesca Clark (Badminton), Francesca Curmi (Tennis), Katryna Esposito (Judo), Janet Richard (Athletics), Colette Sultana (Squash), Melissa Swift (Ten Pin Bowling) and Tenishia Thornton (Weightlifting). All renowned medalists in their respective game.

In addition, Anna’s name was thrown in the race along with ten others vying for the award. In the months that followed the dissolution of the Malta Taekwondo Federation, Taekwondo in Malta has reached some serious, new heights. Particularly when it comes to athletic development.

She will now compete with Peter Balzan (Water Polo), Terry Camilleri (Snooker), Joanna Cassar (Badminton), Philip Gatt (Blackball), Alan Grima (Handball), Warren Muscat (Triathlon), Ronnie Spiteri (Water Polo), Abraham Vassallo (Wrestling) and Rhona Xerri (Rugby) for the award.

Active sports journalists who are members of the Malta Sports Journalists Association will be voting to determine the five finalists in each category, from which the winner will be announced during the awards night.

Best of luck Michela and Anna, you’ve earned it.
